Memorial Service

"To everything there is a season, a time for everything under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die..."

(Ecclesiastes 3:1-2)

A memorial service offers a sacred space for remembering and giving thanks for the life of a loved one. It is an opportunity to gather with family and friends, to honour their memory, and to entrust them into God’s eternal care.

Whether held soon after a bereavement or at a later date, this service provides comfort, reflection, and hope. It may take place in church, in a crematorium chapel, or at another location that holds significance.

A Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance

A memorial service is distinct from a funeral service. While a funeral takes place before burial or cremation, a memorial service is held at any time to mark a person’s life and legacy. The tone is reverent yet uplifting, acknowledging grief while celebrating the hope of the resurrection.

The structure usually includes:

  • Hymns or reflective music
  • Readings from Scripture
  • A sermon or tribute in memory of the person who has died
  • Time for personal reflection or shared stories
  • Prayers of thanksgiving, intercession, and comfort
  • A final blessing

Personalising the Service

Each memorial service is unique, shaped by the wishes of the family and the life of the person being remembered. We will support you in selecting hymns, readings, and prayers that reflect their character, faith, and values.

If desired, the service may include a moment for individuals to share memories or offer prayers. Candles may be lit, and symbols of their life—such as photographs or meaningful items—may be placed at the front.

Entrusting Our Loved Ones to God

In this sacred act of remembrance, we affirm the Christian hope that those who have died rest in God’s eternal love. Through words of comfort and blessing, we pray for peace and strength for all who mourn.

Whether you seek a simple gathering or a larger service, we are here to guide and support you through this time of reflection and remembrance.
